4. Can you describe your process? Do you include design services?

Ideally, you want to work with a contractor who has a clearly-defined process. Ask them to explain it from start to finish. Will you be responsible for handling the design, or can they do this?

5. Who on your team will I be working with on the project?

You may not be working with the person you meet with at the company. Find out who will be on the job site from day to day and ask to meet them. 

6. What is your preferred method of communication? 

Not everyone communicates the same. Make sure your contractor’s preferred method of communication, whether it be via email, text, phone, or something else, works for you. 

7. What sort of timeline can you commit to for this project?

It’s essential that you have a clear idea of when your contractor plans to begin your project and how long they expect it to take, particularly if you have a date in mind. 

8. What payment schedule do you expect?

It’s important that you and your contractor are on the same page from the start with respect to the payment schedule. Are they asking for a deposit with payments at certain milestones? Get this in writing. 

9. Can you provide a list of references?

Find out if you can speak with former clients to view the contractor’s work and discuss the process. If they aren’t willing to provide credible references, this could be a red flag. 

10. Do you offer a guarantee for your work?

Most contractors will warranty their work, and some even put this guarantee in writing. This is something you want clearly disclosed in case there are any defects or problems down the road.
